What does Medicare Part B cover?

Part B covers medically necessary outpatient services and preventative services.

Here are some examples of what is covered under Medicare Part B:

  • Outpatient Physician Services
  • Outpatient diagnostic tests and/or procedures
  • Ambulance
  • Emergency services
  • Home Health Care
  • Outpatient mental health
  • Durable Medical Equipment
  • Preventative services, such as some vaccines, test and/or procedures

How do I get Medicare Part B?

You get Medicare Part B automatically 3 months before your 65th birthday if you are collecting your social security benefits. If you aren't collecting your Social Security or are covered under an employer plan, please contact SSA at 1-800-772-5772. For more information on enrolling in Original Medicare click here.

What will I pay for Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B has a monthly premium, depending on when you enroll. If you enroll when first eligible, don't collect social security, have state Medicaid, and make below a certain amount on your IRS AGI, you will pay the standard amount. See Medicare rate page here to see current figure.

If you didn't sign up when first eligible, you Part B premium will have a penalty of 10% for each year you didn't enroll.

If you make above a certain amount on your IRS adjusted gross income (AGI) you will pay an IRMMA or an Income Related Monthly Adjusted Amount, this is an extra charge added to your monthly Part B premium – click here to see current rates.
